The region the abbey of st maurice at agaunum (old name for st-maurice) was built in 515 by the chief abbey of the burgundian kingdom, saint sigismond, over an older sanctuary where martyr s bones of maurice burried in the 3rd century. several pilgrims including kings and princes wanted to share their attachment to the thebains martyrs by offering them gifts: statues, reliquaries, etc to enrich a liturgical and artistical collection which reflects all the different periods from the 5th century until now.
